Classifications

Classifications are used to help you learn more about the impact of the content of a film, and who a suitable audience may be. Consumer advice accompanies classifications for most films which can be used to help you learn more about the specific type of content, such as language, violence and sex scenes.

We advise you to read through these classifications as they can help you choose a film that is suitable for you as well as your family.

Please note that films rated MA 15+ or R 18+ are restricted to persons over 15 and 18 years respectively. It is a legal requirement that cinemas do not permit entry to persons under these ages. Photo ID may be required to purchase tickets for a film with an MA 15+ or R 18+ rating.

G General
G films are for general viewing for all audiences, and are great for family entertainment, especially families with young children. Note that while many G films are for children, not all may be of interest.
PG Parental Guidance is recommended
PG films are suitable for families with older children as some scenes may frighten or offend young children. Content may be mild in impact, and require explanation to younger children.
M Recommended for Mature Audiences
Some content in an M rated film may be unsuitable for persons under 15 years of age. Although persons under 15 can legally see an M rated film, it is advised that parents or guardians approve the choice of film prior to purchasing tickets. Due to the moderate impact of content, a level of maturity is required.
MA 15+ Restricted. Not suitable for people under 15
The content is strong in impact, and MA 15+ films are not suitable for people under 15 years. A person under 15 years can be admitted to an MA 15+ film when accompanied by a parent or adult guardian for the duration of the film. Photo ID may be required as proof of age.
R 18+ Restricted to 18 years and over
It is a legal requirement that all audience members be over 18 years of age. Content in an R rated film is very high in impact and suitable only for mature and adult audiences. People under 18 cannot be admitted to an R 18+ film. Photo ID may be required as proof of age.

What's the difference between M and MA 15+?

While films that are rated M have no restrictions on them, the content is often moderate in nature and impact, and requires a mature audience. M rated films are generally not suitable for those under 15 years.

Films that are rated MA 15+ are legally restricted to those over 15 years of age, as content is often strong and unsuitable for those under 15 years. Persons under 15 years can see an MA 15+ rated film if they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Photographic ID may be requested by CMAX Cinemas staff to determine proof of age for MA 15+ films.

Who qualifies as a "guardian" for a person under 15?

For MA 15+ films, persons under 15 years of age can be admitted if they are accompanied by their parent or an adult guardian. The parent/guardian must also purchase a ticket to the film, and remain with those under 15 years for the duration of the session.

An adult guardian is an adult over 18 years of age who is supervising parental responsibilities to those under 15 years of age. A guardian may include a grandparent or aunt/uncle, however generally will not include older siblings. CMAX Cinemas are legally required to refuse entry to those under 15 years of age who are unaccompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Proof of Age

CMAX Cinemas may request photographic ID to determine proof of age for films rated MA 15+ or R 18+. If you are unable to provide photographic ID when requested, you may be denied entry to the film.
